Of the total EV population of 2.95 million units (as of end of September 2023), 1.60million or 54.48% comprise of two- wheelers. Then there are 1.19million three-wheeler owners, comprising both passenger-carrying and cargo carriers and accounting for 40.51% of the overall market. The number of two-wheelers EVs in the market has increased from 24,725 in December, 2021 to 86,067 in March, 2023. FAME by government has emerged as a key component in increasing the market size of EVs.
Geographical Distribution of Marketplace:
1. Maharashtra showed maximum deployment of EV in India followed by Delhi, UP and Karnataka.
2. Delhi has set targets for phasing out fossil-fuel vehicles in certain segments to accelerate the adoption of EV, which includes:
a) Transitioning buses and autorickshaws to electric.
b) Mandating electric vehicles for government use.
c) Encouraging delivery services and ride-sharing companies to switch to EVs. promote sustainability, supported by incentives for EV purchase and charging infra development.
3. According to VAHAN, the electric two-wheeler market has seen significant sales increase of 34.42%. A strong growth was observed in 2023, UP held maximum shares in EV sales. UP has maximum number of 3 wheelers i.e. 2,77,837 units.
4. High suitability of 2 wheelers on Indian traffic conditions (two wheelers), used in more crowded ones (Delhi, Gurugram etc.).
Two and Three Wheelers:
1. State-wise, the largest 2-wheeler market is in Maharashtra, with about 2.7 Lakhs Registered Vehicles till September 2023 and Zone-wise, southern zone is ahead.
2. In Southern India, EV action is increasing with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh housing the manufacturing operations of the leading two-wheeler OEMs. The EV three-wheeler market ranges from Mahindra Last Mile Mobility’s plant in Bengaluru to Ather Energy’s at Hosur, Tamil Nadu or Hero MotoCorp’s Vida-producing factory at Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh.
3. Tamil Nadu has already made its intention clear to become the EV capital of the country and given the momentum and the sharpened focus of Southern India, expect this region to continue to provide the fireworks when it comes to increasing EV ownership.
The above line graph depicts the registered E2W sales between December 2021 to March 2023. It clearly illustrates the rising trajectory of E2W penetration in the Indian economy. In the month of March 2023, 86,067 registered E2W sales were recorded by the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV).
Components of servicing of 2-wheeler EV vehicles VS components of servicing of 2-wheeler petrol vehicles:
Servicing 2-wheeler electric vehicles (EVs) and 2-wheeler petrol vehicles involves different components and processes due to the distinct nature of their powertrains and operational mechanisms. Here is a comparison of the components involved in servicing both types:
Components of Servicing 2-Wheeler Electric Vehicles (EVs)
Battery System:
• Battery Health Check: Assess the state of charge (SOC), state of health (SOH), and overall performance of the battery pack.
• Cooling System: Inspect and service the battery cooling system, if applicable.
• Connections and Wiring: Check for corrosion, loose connections, and damaged wiring.
Electric Motor:
• Inspection: Examine the motor for signs of wear or damage
• Cooling System: Ensure the motor’s cooling system is functioning properly, if present.
Power Electronics:
• Inverter: Inspect and test the inverter, which converts DC from the battery to AC for the motor.
• Controller: Check the motor controller for proper operation.
Charging System:
• Onboard Charger: Inspect the onboard charger and ensure it is functioning correctly.
• Charging Port: Check the charging port for any damage or debris.
Regenerative Braking System:
• Brake Pads and Rotors: Check and replace brake pads and rotors as needed.
• System Functionality: Ensure the regenerative braking system is operating efficiently.
Software and Firmware:
• Updates: Perform any necessary software or firmware updates to the vehicle’s electronic control units (ECUs).
General Components:
• Tires: Inspect and replace tires as needed.
• Suspension: Check suspension components for wear and tear.
• Lights and Indicators: Ensure all lights and indicators are functioning properly.
• Chassis and Body: Inspect for any structural damage or corrosion.
Components of Servicing 2-Wheeler Petrol Vehicles
Engine:
• Oil Change: Replace engine oil and oil filter.
• Spark Plugs: Inspect and replace spark plugs.
• Air Filter: Check and replace the air filter.
• Fuel System: Inspect the fuel lines, fuel filter, and carburettor or fuel injection system.
• Exhaust System: Check for leaks or damage and ensure proper function of the exhaust system.
Transmission:
• Gearbox Oil: Check and replace gearbox oil.
• Clutch: Inspect clutch plates and replace if necessary.
• Chain/Belt: Lubricate and adjust the chain or belt; replace if worn. .
Cooling System:
• Coolant: Check coolant levels and top up or replace as needed.
• Radiator: Inspect the radiator and hoses for leaks or blockages.
Ignition System:
• Battery: Check the battery’s charge and replace if necessary.
• Ignition Timing: Ensure the ignition timing is set correctly.
Braking System:
• Brake Pads and Discs: Inspect and replace brake pads and discs as necessary.
• Brake Fluid: Check and replace brake fluid.
Fuel System:
• Fuel Filter: Replace the fuel filter.
• Fuel Lines: Inspect for leaks and replace if necessary.
General Components:
• Tires: Inspect and replace tires as needed.
• Suspension: Check suspension components for wear and tear.
• Lights and Indicators: Ensure all lights and indicators are functioning properly.
• Chassis and Body: Inspect for any structural damage or corrosion.
Summary
• Battery System vs. Engine: EVs focus on battery health and electronics, while petrol vehicles require oil changes, spark plug maintenance, and fuel system checks.
• Electric Motor vs. Transmission: EVs have fewer moving parts in the motor, reducing the need for frequent servicing, unlike the complex transmission systems in petrol vehicles.
• Power Electronics vs. Ignition System: EVs involve servicing inverters and controllers, whereas petrol vehicles need ignition timing adjustments and battery checks.
• Braking Systems: Both types require brake inspections, but EVs also check the regenerative braking system.
• Cooling Systems: Both need cooling system maintenance, though the components differ (battery cooling in EVs vs. engine cooling in petrol vehicles).
EV servicing is generally simpler with fewer moving parts, focusing on electrical and software components, while petrol vehicles require more mechanical and fluid maintenance.
